Junket: Tossed & Found and Better Futures Minnesota
Launch Social Enterprise Partnership to Promote Sustainability
The two organizations aim to help build a more just, sustainable economy in Minnesota through new creative reuse development and education center
Leaders from Junket: Tossed & Found and Better Futures Minnesota believe social justice is dependent, in part, on environmental justice; they believe much more must be done to address the urgent challenges related to climate change; they believe our society has failed to take on this overarching issue in meaningful ways; they know low income communities and people of color are disproportionately harmed by climate change; and, they know many citizens in our community want to contribute to solving these serious problems.
As a result, Junket: Tossed & Found and Better Futures Minnesota have conceived of a bold initiative to ensure we all have opportunities to participate in the transition to a just, sustainable economy. In the spring of 2019, the partners will open a community space to facilitate creative reuse (and the meaningful preservation of embodied energy) through teaching, learning, events and classes. This space will also promote community building, skill development, carbon-neutral to carbon-negative product manufacturing, and green jobs creation.
Junket: Tossed & Found is a south Minneapolis-based social enterprise that has focused on solving challenges at the intersection of community, creativity, and reuse since 2010. Junket recently closed its brick & mortar location in order to achieve more environmental impact via existing materials aggregation, supply chain development, and online & mobile redistribution—as well as to ensure a successful launch of the aforementioned community space. In service to this long-term vision, the company has relocated to 2620 Minnehaha Avenue and is now operating in co-location with Better Futures.
Better Futures Minnesota is one of the nation’s premier social enterprises dedicated to social and environmental change. Since 2007, Better Futures Minnesota has supported the personal ambitions of more than 1,000 men who have otherwise faced barriers to opportunities and stabilization. Through a unique integrated-care model, Better Futures is able to provide the stable housing, job training, health care support., and life coaching services men need to walk on their own path to success. . This distinctive model is anchored within a thriving community and meaningful relationships. Better Futures also operates five businesses—including deconstruction and its ReUse Warehouse —that provide jobs and hands-on training for participants.
This community asset will be jointly operated by Junket: Tossed & Found and Better Futures Minnesota at 2620 Minnehaha in Minneapolis. The partners will begin accepting memberships for using the space and its equipment later this year. Classes are slated to begin in March 2019.
